I could not solve the problem – I tried all the normal things – so I succumbed to getting a repair man in via what seemed to be a safe website – The iMac was working perfectly well otherwise there was just a problem getting online via WiFi. So it was not a WiFi signal problem it was an iMac problem. I found I could not access WiFi on my Apple iMac although, on the same desk in the same room, my iPad and iPhone COULD access the WiFi.
